Mining legacy data: digitizing well logs leads to bypassed pay opportunities. International Datashare Corporation’s iDc computer software that filters graphic data through an algorithm programmed to recognize pre-set patterns, a process similar to optical character recognition, is described.
The software is particularly well suited to large volumes of legacy data because it does not recognize numbers or calculations. Instead, it scans well log files as high-resolution raster files, strips them of all numeric data to isolate hydrocarbon signatures.
This pattern recognition is expected to expose to trained professionals significant bypassed oil and gas pay that at the time of first development of the well were considered worthless due to lack of markets and transportation infrastructure. This new ‘data mining’ application is intended to enable operators to locate and develop hydrocarbon reserves that were originally bypassed. Technology advances in the past few years have prompted an effort at Argonne National Laboratory to replace existing equipment with high performance digital computers and color graphic displays.
Improved operation of process systems can be achieved by utilizing state-of-the-art computer technology in the areas of process control and process monitoring. This paper describes the main control computer and the operator interface control software. In this work, we present the design of a radix reciprocal unit based on the algorithm combining the traditional digit-by-digit algorithm and the approximation of the reciprocal by one Newton-Raphson i The design model will be a framework for both academic analytical studies as well as for designing time-based narratives and visual concepts involving motion graphics in spatial contexts.
I focus on cases in which both pre-rendered, and live generated motion graphics are designed In our digital age, we frequently meet fine examples of live performances of classical music with accompanying visuals. Yet, we find very little theoretical or analytical work on the relation between classical music and digital temporal visuals, nor on the process of creating them.
In this paper, I I show how various design elements and components: line and shape, tone and colour, time and timing, rhythm and movement interact with conceptualizations of space A field guide to digital color. Raster -scanning serial protein crystallography using micro- and nano-focused synchrotron beams. New serial data pre-analysis software, NanoPeakCell, is introduced. Data were collected at room temperature RT from crystals sandwiched between two silicon nitride wafers, thereby preventing their drying, while limiting background scattering and sample consumption. In order to identify crystal hits, new multi-processing and GUI-driven Python-based pre-analysis software was developed, named NanoPeakCell, that was able to read data from a variety of crystallographic image formats.
Further data processing was carried out using CrystFEL, and the resultant structures were refined to 1. The data demonstrate the feasibility of RT raster -scanning serial micro- and nano-protein crystallography at synchrotrons and validate it as an alternative approach for the collection of high-resolution structural data from micro-sized crystals.
Advantages of the proposed approach are its thriftiness, its handling-free nature, the reduced amount of sample required, the adjustable hit rate, the high indexing rate and the minimization of background scattering. Highly segmented, position-sensitive germanium detector systems are being developed for nuclear physics research where traditional electronic signal processing with mixed analog and digital function blocks would be enormously complex and costly.
Future systems will be constructed using pipelined processing of high-speed digitized signals as is done in the telecommunications industry. Techniques which provide rapid algorithm and system development for future systems are desirable. This project has used digital signal processing concepts and existing graphical system design tools to develop a set of re-usable modular functions and libraries targeted for the nuclear physics community.
Researchers working with complex nuclear detector arrays such as the Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking Array GRETA have been able to construct advanced data processing algorithms for implementation in field programmable gate arrays FPGAs through application of these library functions using intuitive graphical interfaces.
Graphical approach for multiple values logic minimization. Multiple valued logic MVL is sought for designing high complexity, highly compact, parallel digital circuits. However, the practical realization of an MVL-based system is dependent on optimization of cost, which directly affects the optical setup. We propose a minimization technique for MVL logic optimization based on graphical visualization, such as a Karnaugh map.
The proposed method is utilized to solve signed- digit binary and trinary logic minimization problems. The usefulness of the minimization technique is demonstrated for the optical implementation of MVL circuits.

Full Text Available Digital radiography incresingly is being applied in the fabrication industry. Compared to film- based radiography, digitally radiographed images can be acquired with less time and fewer exposures. However, noises can simply occur on the digital image resulting in a low-quality result. Therefore, the need of an application tool to improve and evaluate the image is becoming urgent.
In this research, a user-friendly tool for image processing and image quality measurement was developed. The resulting tool contains important components needed by radiograph inspectors in analyzing defects and recording the results. In image processing methods, contrast adjustment, and noise removal, edge detection was applied.
In image quality measurement methods, mean square error MSE, peak signal-to-noise ratio PSNR, modulation transfer function MTF, normalized signal-to-noise ratio SNRnorm, sensitivity and unsharpness were used to measure the image quality.

Fast DRR splat rendering using common consumer graphics hardware. This paper presents a technique to accelerate DRR creation by using conventional graphics hardware for the rendering process. DRR computation itself is done by an efficient volume rendering method named wobbled splatting. The description of an algorithm used for rendering DRRs on the graphics hardware is presented, together with a benchmark comparing this technique to a CPU-based wobbled splatting program.
For instance, rendering a volume of 2×10 6 voxels is feasible at an update rate of 38 Hz compared to 6 Hz on a common Intel-based PC using the graphics processing unit GPU of a conventional graphics adapter. In addition, wobbled splatting using graphics hardware for DRR computation provides higher resolution DRRs with comparable image quality due to special processing characteristics of the GPU.

Laser direct marking applied to rasterizing miniature Data Matrix Code on aluminum alloy. The characteristic edge over-burn effects, which render vector mode laser direct part marking inadequate for producing precise and readable miniature codes, are minimized with raster mode laser marking. To obtain the control mechanism for the contrast and print growth of miniature DM code by raster laser marking process, the temperature field model of long pulse laser interaction with material is established.
From the experimental results, laser average power and Q frequency have an important effect on the contrast and print growth of miniature DM code, and the threshold of laser average power and Q frequency for an identifiable miniature DM code are respectively 3.
In addition, the empirical model of correlation occurring between laser marking parameters and module size is also obtained, and the optimal processing parameter values for an identifiable miniature DM code of different but certain data size are given.
It is also found that an increase of the repeat scanning number effectively improves the surface finish of bore, the appearance consistency of modules, which has benefit to reading. The reading quality of miniature DM code is greatly improved using ultrasonic cleaning in water by avoiding the interference of color speckles surrounding modules.

Full Text Available At present, there are many problems in the storage and management of multi-source heterogeneous spatial data, such as the difficulty of transferring, the lack of unified storage and the low efficiency. By combining relational database and spatial data engine technology, an approach for integrated storage and management of vector and raster data is proposed on the basis of Oracle in this paper.
This approach establishes an integrated storage model on vector and raster data and optimizes the retrieval mechanism at first, then designs a framework for the seamless data transfer, finally realizes the unified storage and efficient management of multi-source heterogeneous data.
By comparing experimental results with the international leading similar software ArcSDE, it is proved that the proposed approach has higher data transfer performance and better query retrieval efficiency. With the help of computer technologies, people with visual impairment can independently access digital textual information by using text-to-speech and text-to-Braille software. However, in general, there still exists a major barrier for people who are blind to access the graphical information independently in real-time without the help of sighted people.
To reduce the time spent on getting a file ready for output, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite allowed users to add solid vector shadows to objects and text. By reducing the number of lines and nodes in shadows, it massively sped up a process allowing designers to focus on output and volume rather than time-consuming processes. PhotoCocktail gave users the opportunity to create photo collages.
Using their own images, or one of the thousands of royalty-free images included in CorelDRAW , designers could build replicating mosaic tiles which PhotoCocktail would transform into beautiful collages.
The whites of her eyes were yellow, due to a kidney problem according to Mary. I was sad to learn that she died about a month later, never receiving the medical treatment she so desperately needed. This happens all too often in Haiti, as medical treatment seems to be in dire need and out of reach for all except the most affluent people.
Each day we ventured out of the orphanage into and through the neighborhood, whether going to Mass in the morning, or off to perform service work at one of the Missionaries of Charity facilities, I was continually fascinated and engrossed by the world around me.
Whatever problems I might have waiting for me at home, they seemed so small and inconsequential compared to the enormity of what these people faced on a daily basis, and yet most of the people I met were so alive, filled with hope and joy even in these dire conditions. The most difficult problems for me while I was there were dealing with the heat and the endless raucous chorus of roosters crowing all night long.
Sleep was never more than an hour to an hour and a half at a time. The roosters crowed all night, answering each other trying not to be outdone, and constantly woke me up. During the night, you could also hear the chanting of people practicing voodoo in the distant darkness; an oddity to us, but something that many Haitians readily mix with their belief in Christianity. Those first four and a half days passed quickly, and soon it was time for us to say goodbye to the sisters and the children and depart for the village of Despinasse, up in the mountains to begin the second half of our mission trip.

Direct digital manufacturing includes such information technology processes, where products are directly manufactured from 3D CAD model. In digital manufacturing, engineering drawing is replaced by CAD product model. In the contemporary practice, lots of engineering paper-based drawings are still archived.
They could be digitalized by scanner and stored to one of the raster graphics format and after that vectorized for interactive editing in the specific software system for technical drawing or for archiving in some of the standard vector graphics file format.

The work consists of these main parts: analysis Motion compensation in digital subtraction angiography using graphics hardware. An inherent disadvantage of digital subtraction angiography DSA is its sensitivity to patient motion which causes artifacts in the subtraction images.
These artifacts could often reduce the diagnostic value of this technique. Automated, fast and accurate motion compensation is therefore required. To cope with this requirement, we first examine a method explicitly designed to detect local motions in DSA. Then, we implement a motion compensation algorithm by means of block matching on modern graphics hardware.
Both methods search for maximal local similarity by evaluating a histogram-based measure. In this context, we are the first who have mapped an optimizing search strategy on graphics hardware while paralleling block matching.
Moreover, we provide an innovative method for creating histograms on graphics hardware with vertex texturing and frame buffer blending. Preliminary clinical evaluation indicates that the computation with integer precision could already be sufficient.
Some Thoughts on Contemporary Graphic Print. Full Text Available The production requirements of original graphic works of art have changed since The development of digital printing using lightfast colors now rivals traditional techniques such as wood cut, screen print, lithography, etching etc.
Today, with respect to artistic legitimacy, original graphics using traditional printing techniques compete with original graphics produced by digital printing techniques on the art market.
What criteria distinguish traditional printing techniques from those of digital printing in the production and acquisition of original graphics? What consequences is the serious artist faced with when deciding to implement digital print production? How does digital print change original graphic acquisition decisions? An 8-color multiplanar volumetric display is being developed by Actuality Systems, Inc. It will be capable of utilizing an image volume greater than 90 million voxels, which we believe is the greatest utilizable voxel set of any volumetric display constructed to date. The display is designed to be used for molecular visualization, mechanical CAD, e-commerce, entertainment, and medical imaging. As such, it contains a new graphics processing architecture, novel high-performance line- drawing algorithms, and an API similar to a current standard.
Three-dimensional imagery is created by projecting a series of 2-D bitmaps ‘image slices’ onto a diffuse screen that rotates at rpm. Persistence of vision fuses the slices into a volume-filling 3-D image. A modified three-panel Texas Instruments projector provides slices at approximately 4 kHz, resulting in 8-color 3-D imagery comprised of roughly radially-disposed slices which are updated at 20 Hz. Each slice has a resolution of by pixels, subtending 10 inches.
An unusual off-axis projection scheme incorporating tilted rotating optics is used to maintain good focus across the projection screen. Fast generation of multiple resolution instances of raster data sets.

Raster Vs. Airborne Laser Scanning systems with light detection and ranging LiDAR technology is one of the fast and accurate 3D point data acquisition techniques. Recently, LiDAR range and intensity data have been used for land cover classification applications.
Data range and Intensity, strength of the backscattered signals measured by the LiDAR systems , are affected by the flying height, the ground elevation, scanning angle and the physical characteristics of the objects surface.
These effects may lead to uneven distribution of point cloud or some gaps that may affect the classification process. Researchers have investigated the conversion of LiDAR range point data to raster image for terrain modelling. Interpolation techniques have been used to achieve the best representation of surfaces, and to fill the gaps between the LiDAR footprints.
Interpolation methods are also investigated to generate LiDAR range and intensity image data for land cover classification applications. In this paper, different approach has been followed to classifying the LiDAR data range and intensity for land cover mapping. The methodology relies on the classification of the point cloud data based on their range and intensity and then converted the classified points into raster image.
The gaps in the data are filled based on the classes of the nearest neighbour. Land cover maps are produced using two approaches using: a the conventional raster image data based on point interpolation; and b the proposed point data classification. A study area covering an urban district in Burnaby, British Colombia, Canada, is selected to compare the results of the two approaches.
Five different land cover classes can be distinguished in that area: buildings, roads and parking areas, trees, low vegetation grass , and bare soil. The use of computer-generated color graphic images for transient thermal analysis. Color computer graphics techniques were investigated as a means of rapidly scanning and interpreting large sets of transient heating data.
The data presented were generated to support the conceptual design of a heat-sink thermal protection system TPS for a hypersonic research airplane. Color-coded vector and raster displays of the numerical geometry used in the heating calculations were employed to analyze skin thicknesses and surface temperatures of the heat-sink TPS under a variety of trajectory flight profiles.
Both vector and raster displays proved to be effective means for rapidly identifying heat-sink mass concentrations, regions of high heating, and potentially adverse thermal gradients. The color-coded raster surface displays are a very efficient means for displaying surface-temperature and heating histories, and thereby the more stringent design requirements can quickly be identified.
The related hardware and software developments required to implement both the vector and the raster displays for this application are also discussed. Epidemiological geomatics in evaluation of mine risk education in Afghanistan: introducing population weighted raster maps.
Full Text Available Abstract Evaluation of mine risk education in Afghanistan used population weighted raster maps as an evaluation tool to assess mine education performance, coverage and costs.
A stratified last-stage random cluster sample produced representative data on mine risk and exposure to education. Clusters were weighted by the population they represented, rather than the land area.
A “friction surface” hooked the population weight into interpolation of cluster-specific indicators. The resulting population weighted raster contours offer a model of the population effects of landmine risks and risk education.
Five indicator levels ordered the evidence from simple description of the population-weighted indicators level 0, through risk analysis levels 1—3 to modelling programme investment and local variations level 4. Using graphic overlay techniques, it was possible to metamorphose the map, portraying the prediction of what might happen over time, based on the causality models developed in the epidemiological analysis.
Based on a lattice of local site-specific predictions, each cluster being a small universe, the “average” prediction was immediately interpretable without losing the spatial complexity. Mixed raster content segmentation, compression, transmission. This book presents the main concepts in handling digital images of mixed content, traditionally referenced as mixed raster content MRC , in two main parts.
The first includes introductory chapters covering the scientific and technical background aspects, whereas the second presents a set of research and development approaches to tackle key issues in MRC segmentation, compression and transmission.
The book starts with a review of color theory and the mechanism of color vision in humans. In turn, the second chapter reviews data coding and compression methods so as to set the background and demonstrate the complexity involved in dealing with MRC. Chapter three addresses the segmentation of images through an extensive literature review, which highlights the various approaches used to tackle MRC segmentation. The second part of the book focuses on the segmentation of color images for optimized compression, including multi-layered decomposition and representation of MRC and the processes that can be employed to op In this paper we describe efficient algorithms for different variants of this prob In this paper we describe efficient algorithms for different variants We also provide two algorithms that solve this problem in external memory, that is when the input raster is larger than the main memory.
For this variant we describe an algorithm that runs in U logN time in internal memory, where U is the size of the output. We show how this algorithm can be adapted to perform efficiently in the external memory using O sort U data transfers from the disk.

The original numerical results of extensive computer calculations performed at the time of the actual PSE tests and required for the later extended analysis program had not been retained as archival records.
We were, therefore, required to recover the previously calculated data, either by a complete recalculation or from available computer graphics records. Time constraints suggested recovery from the graphics records as the more viable approach. This report describes two different approaches to recovery of digital data from graphics records.
One, combining hard and software techniques immediately available to us at LLL, proved to be inadequate for our purposes. The other approach required the development of pure software techniques that interfaced with LLL computer graphics to unpack digital coordinate information directly from graphics files.
As a result of this effort, we were able to recover the required data with no significant loss in the accuracy of the original calculations. REPTool is designed to introduce concepts of error and uncertainty in geospatial data and modeling and provide users of ArcGIS Desktop a geoprocessing tool and methodology to consider how error affects geospatial model output. REPTool consists of public-domain, Python-based packages that implement Latin Hypercube Sampling within a probabilistic framework to track error propagation in geospatial models and quantitatively estimate the uncertainty of the model output. Users may specify error for each input raster or model coefficient represented in the geospatial model.
The error for the input rasters may be specified as either spatially invariant or spatially variable across the spatial domain. Users may specify model output as a distribution of uncertainty for each raster cell. REPTool uses the Relative Variance Contribution method to quantify the relative error contribution from the two primary components in the geospatial model – errors in the model input data and coefficients of the model variables.
REPTool is appropriate for many types of geospatial processing operations, modeling applications, and related research questions, including applications that consider spatially invariant or spatially variable error in geospatial data. A new algorithm based on displacing vertices to realize the embedding and extracting of digital watermarking in vector data was proposed after that. The results showed that the watermark produced by the method is resistant against translation, scaling, rotation, additive random noise; it is also resistant, to some extent, against cropping. This paper also modified the DCT raster image watermarking algorithm, using a bitmap image as watermark embedded into target images, instead of some meaningless serial numbers or simple symbols.
The embedding and extraction part of these two digital watermark systems achieved with software. Experiments proved that both algorithms are not only imperceptible, but also have strong resistance against the common attracts, which can prove the copyright more effectively. CT applications of medical computer graphics. Few applications of computer graphics show as much promise and early success as that for CT.
Unlike electron microscopy, ultrasound, business, military, and animation applications, CT image data are inherently digital. CT pictures can be processed directly by programs well established in the fields of computer graphics and digital image processing. Methods for reformatting digital pictures, enhancing structure shape, reducing image noise, and rendering three-dimensional 3D scenes of anatomic structures have all become routine at many CT centers.
In this chapter, the authors provide a brief introduction to computer graphics terms and techniques commonly applied to CT pictures and, when appropriate, to those showing promise for magnetic resonance images. Topics discussed here are image-processing options that are applied to digital images already constructed. In the final portion of this chapter techniques for ”slicing” CT image data are presented, and geometric principles that describe the specification of oblique and curved images are outlined.
Clinical examples are included. Single-photon compressive imaging with some performance benefits over raster scanning. A single-photon imaging system based on compressed sensing has been developed to image objects under ultra-low illumination.
With this system, we have successfully realized imaging at the single-photon level with a single-pixel avalanche photodiode without point-by-point raster scanning. From analysis of the signal-to-noise ratio in the measurement we find that our system has much higher sensitivity than conventional ones based on point-by-point raster scanning, while the measurement time is also reduced.
Visual neuroscience experiments and Brain-Computer Interface BCI control often require strict timings in a millisecond scale. As most experiments are performed using a personal computer PC , the latencies that are introduced by the setup should be taken into account and be corrected. As a standard computer monitor uses a rastering to update each line of the image sequentially, this causes a monitor raster latency which depends on the position, on the monitor and the refresh rate.
We technically measured the raster latencies of different monitors and present the effects on visual evoked potentials VEPs and event-related potentials ERPs. Additionally we present a method for correcting the monitor raster latency and analyzed the performance difference of a code-modulated VEP BCI speller by correcting the latency.
Furthermore, correcting the raster latency resulted in a significant reduction of the target prediction error from 7. The monitor raster latency affects the timings of VEPs and ERPs, and correcting resulted in a significant error reduction of It is recommend to correct the raster latency for an increased BCI performance and methodical correctness. Meyer, Travis R. We propose a novel method to detect and correct drift in non- raster scanning probe microscopy. In conventional raster scanning drift is usually corrected by subtracting a fitted polynomial from each scan line, but sample tilt or large topographic features can result in severe artifacts.
Our method uses self-intersecting scan paths to distinguish drift from topographic features. Observing the height differences when passing the same position at different times enables the reconstruction of a continuous function of drift.
We show that a small number of self-intersections is adequate for automatic and reliable drift correction. Additionally, we introduce a fitness function which provides a quantitative measure of drift correctability for any arbitrary scan shape.
