I bought this for my son who is 9 years old. He had a blast with it. He wouldn’t stop playing until he beat the game! Unexpectedly, my 7 year old daughter had a great time with it too. However, she reads at a 3rd grade level.
She’s not at a typical reading level for a 7 year old. I was concerned that the game would not work because I read so many reviews that said it wasn’t compatible with newer computers. I have windows XP and it worked just fine. It never froze. The box it comes in looks different than the one pictured. It came in a deep purple box. I would recommend this to anyone who has middle to late elementary students. It was fun! Poor install. Took many attempts and much difficulty to install, from someone that has extensive experience with software installations.
Program has very poor graphics, grainy and diminished in size. Would not recommend. This does not work on any of my computers. I’m sad about it because this used to be one of my favorite games. I finally get it and it doesn’t work. Waste of money. Unfortunately will not work with Windows I have windows 7 and the game ran on my computer without any modifications like changing color or settings to windows I was able to play the game for about 2 hours and everything was fine but I was getting hungry, so I press the button to turn off the game.
Once the credits were done scrolling through, an error message came up. The game didn’t save. I then tried to change the color, change window settings to previous versions, but nothing helped.
So basically, the game doesn’t save. I’ve read the other reviews and knew that might happen before I bought it but I just love the Carmen series so much to not at least give it a try. One person found this helpful. I used to play this game in the early 90s, and had fond memories of it.
I now have a daughter and tried to introduce it to her. The game is now totally different. The progress through the cases is not based on knowledge anymore but on guesses. It was not interesting to my daughter, and she gave up after about 5 minutes. I stuck to it a little longer to see if it got more interesting with more difficult cases, but eventually gave up as well.
This new version is boring at best. It seems it is a dumbed down version of the original. I tried to identify what had happened to the original games. The truth came out on Wikipedia. The company that produced the original series of game, all multiple prize winners, sold the games to another company, who rewrote what they are today and did not bother to change the names.
That is pathetic marketing!!!! Another major issue with the program is that it does not install easily. Out of 4 computers, all updated XPs, only one took it cleanly, the oldest and slowest one that I don’t really use anymore.
After some work, I got it installed on another one, but it crashed regularly. After investigating the issue, it looked like other people had the same problem. You would tend to think that the bugs of a 20 year old program would have been worked out by now. I ended up returning the product. My children loved these and now my grandchildren love them. This item arrived on time and is an excellent purchase. Thank you so much Amazon. I use this item frequently. See all reviews.
