Man, I’m really starting to dislike Essentials. Are there any additional things for me to try, or any solutions to what I’ve tried already? I’ve seen backups fail if they are not updated.

I’m currently testing the whole operation with replicas of the VMs concerned within a private network. Once I get the process down and I’m happy that I can perform this reinstall with no loss of data, and minimal disruption to clients, I’ll move to production.

I’ve known people to convert from hyperv to VMware using a converter, and vise-versa with no ill effects. Having tried so many different ways of converting the VM, as well as trying to fix VSS, I feel like I’ve exhausted my options, and that the reinstallation of Essentials is all that’s left.

But even that’s proving to be a problem! I feel like I’m going in circles with this one. Ah ok – I’ve never used xenserver, so what you are doing is the best method. Thanks for the guide. I’ll take a look and see if it’s any different to the one I followed in my first attempt.

What I’d like to understand, is why I could not log the clients into the domain once the roles had been transferred from Essentials to Standard, and Essentials had been shut down. Is it because the original DC needed to be demoted?

I’ll try that migration guide with some snapshots when I get a minute, but I get the feeling that I’m doomed to rebuild the domain from scratch. However, aside from the installation wizard, I’m unsure as to whether there is any mechanism in place to ensure this.

Perhaps it’s just a licencing thing. Either way, I simply want to have a nice fresh installation of Essentials and retain my AD. I’m hoping that I’ll be able to look at that migration guide today.

I’ll be sure to post back the results. Thank you for your help. To continue this discussion, please ask a new question.

Get answers from your peers along with millions of IT pros who visit Spiceworks. I see three options for this:. Use the backup and restore feature Install Essentials on another VM and use the “Configure Windows Server Essentials Wizard” – which runs automatically after installation – to migrate AD data from the old installation Install Server Standard to another VM, add to the domain, transfer roles, reinstall Essentials and somehow transfer everything back I’ve actually tried all three of these, and none worked.

Here’s what happened: I cannot create any backups due to a problem with VSS The “Configure Windows Server Essentials Wizard” always failed to successfully migrate AD data from the old server I managed to add a Server Standard trial to the domain and transfer all the FSMO roles shown successful in netdom query fsmo , but clients continued to look to the Essentials machine for login data, gpupdates etc Man, I’m really starting to dislike Essentials. Which of the following retains the information it’s storing when the system power is turned off?

Gary D Williams wrote: Why do you want to reinstall it? Well, the main reason is because I want to switch hypervisors on the host. Aside from being unable to convert the VM for the new hypervisor anyway, I understand it’s better practice to install guest OSes fresh when switching virtualisation technologies. I probably misunderstand the role of multiple DCs. I thought I would be able to have clients connect to the new DC in the old one’s absence. I did reconfigure the clients in this test scenario to point to the new DNS server. Kevin Hi Kevin, please see above. To answer your question re: backups, the integration features are up to date in the guest. VSS appears to be broken. I’m switching from XenServer 7. Kevin Is it possible that Essentials is the problem here?

Does the original DC need to be demoted in order for it to work? Other than that, it’s just server standard. AD isn’t affected by the SKU in any way. Please post back your results. This topic has been locked by an administrator and is no longer open for commenting.
